Stephen,

Your comment is exactly on point. The best way for those who disagree with my assessments is to take my critiques into account and care less about rebutting them rhetorically online and more about addressing them technologically or pedagogically. For it is the untested, unassessed introduction of consumer platforms into academe that is at issue, especially when those platforms drain education dollars that could be better used or deducted from student fees.

Again, my compliments on your analysis.

Michael, thanks for dropping by and commenting. I have been reading Neil's book, Amusing Ourselves to Death, and have found some very strong parallels between what he writes about and the information technologies that we are dealing with now. It has led me to post a series of blog posts on each chapter as I read them. I think it is critical be be informed and read both sided of these issues. It can be so deceptive to be surrounded by the cheerleaders in any camp and not get to know the thoughts and ideas of those in opposition to those ideas who may help bring balance to the discussion.

How would you define "consumer technologies"?

I am continuing the work of Neil Postman. I have been doing it for 15 years. As you become more familiar with my work, you may find that I do not believe consumer technologies are effective in the classroom; I do, however, believe that they can help control administrative costs by providing transparency. After all, the difference between surveillance and transparency is freedom of information, especially at our public universities.

In the Feb. 1 issue of The Chronicle of Higher Education, I note specifically how technology can control curricular glut.
